MINSK, 4 July (BelTA) – Two Belarusian tennis players Victoria Azarenka and Arina Sobolenko have won their first-round matches in Wimbledon, BelTA has learned.
Victoria Azarenka, No. 683 in the WTA rankings, defeated Catherine Bellis of the United States, No. 40, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. The match lasted for 1 hour 45 minutes. In the second round Victoria Azarenka will face Elena Vesnina of Russia, No. 16 in the rankings.
Grand Slam debutant Arina Sobolenko of Belarus (World No. 136) also won her opener against Irina Khromacheva of Russia in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. In the second round the Belarusian will face Germany’s Carina Witthoft.
Another Belarusian Aleksandra Sasnovich (World No. 89) lost her opening match to World No. 13 Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia 0-6, 6-1, 3-6.
