MINSK, 13 December (BelTA) - Two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka of Belarus has been awarded a wildcard to the Australian Open, BelTA learned from the official website of the first 2018 Grand Slam tournament.
Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley stated that “Vika’s current situation is obviously very difficult for her and we have reached out to offer any support we can.” Thus, Victoria Azarenka will have an opportunity to be one of 128 participants of the competitions’ main draw. The Belarusian thanked the Australian Open organizing committee for the invitation and said that she is looking forward to coming back to Melbourne where she won the competitions in 2012 and 2013. Victoria Azarenka also noted that Australian Open is one of her favorite tournaments.
The 2018 Australian Open is scheduled for 15-28 January. The prize pot of the forthcoming competitions is $42.8 million.
