The war broke out exactly 75 years ago, on 22 June 1941. It was a true ordeal for Belarus. The war brought a lot of grief and losses, but united people together in the fight for one cause – victory and peace. Those several terrible years are not forgotten. Belarus honors the memory of the heroism of the people, and cherishes the peace won at the cost of millions of lives.
Commemorative events and meetings with war veterans are held throughout Belarus on 22 June. It is with a special feeling that the morning of 22 June is marked in Brest and its renowned Hero Fortress, whose defenders were the first to face the enemy, and also in Mogilev and blood-soaked Buinichi Field, where Soviet soldiers held ground for 23 days in July 1941.
