GOMEL, 12 December (BelTA) – Nesvizh was named Belarus Capital of Culture in 2012. On 11 December the city hosted a switchover ceremony from Gomel, the 2011 Capital of Culture, BelTA has learnt.
Attending the event were representatives of the executive directorate of the CIS Interstate Humanitarian Cooperation Fund, the Culture and Information Ministries of Belarus, honored cultural and art figures.
Deputy Culture Minister Tadeush Struzhetsky told BelTA that over 220 exhibitions, concerts, oblast, national and international events were held in Belarus and the CIS’ Capital of Culture in 2011.
Among the major events for 2012 listed by Tadeush Struzhetsky are a Nesvizh Muses festival, opera and choreographic events in the Nesvizh Castle and the opening of the Radziwill Palace.
Belarus’ Capital of Culture program was launched in 2010 to make available the best achievements of the national culture, promote the activity of the regional cultural institutions and local authorities, and lure more tourists. Polotsk as the first Belarus’ Capital of Culture.
