MINSK, 5 February (BelTA) - Belarus defeated Romania 3-2 in the first round of the 2017 Davis Cup Europe/Africa Zone Group I, BelTA has learned.
Yegor Gerasimov (World No.341) brought his team the winning point, seeing off Adrian Ungur (313) 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, 6-4 on 5 February.
Earlier on Sunday Ilya Ivashko (175) lost 5-7, 4-6, 1-6 to Marius Copil (No.129).
On the first matchday, 3 February, Belarus and Romania exchanged victories in the singles rubbers. Ilya Ivashko (175) lost 2-6, 7-5, 5-7, 4-6 to Adrian Ungur (No.313). Then, Yegor Gerasimov beat Marius Copil 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.
On the second matchday the Belarusian duo of Max Mirnyi and Yaroslav Shilo proved to be stronger, defeating Horia Tecau and Marius Copil 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4.
Belarus will next face Austria in the second round of the 2017 Davis Cup Europe/Africa Zone Group I.
