MINSK, 6 August (BelTA) – Best Belarusian tennis players Victoria Azarenka and Max Mirnyi took the 2012 Olympic mixed doubles champion title as they left the British tandem Laura Robson and Andy Murray settle for silver (2-6, 6-3, 10-8), BelTA has learnt.
The decisive match at Centre Court had an unlucky start for the Belarusians. They lost four serves in a row and got only two points in the first set. Azarenka and Mirnyi managed to strike for a 3-1 lead in the second set and stayed calm to level the match.
The fate of the Olympic gold was decided in the short third set where the Belarusian pair held the nerve to take the victory.
It is the second 2012 Olympic medal for Victoria Azarenka. The 23-year-old World No. 1 claimed singles bronze defeating Russia’s Maria Kirilenko (No. 15) 6-3, 6-4. Men’s doubles world number one Max Mirnyi graced the Olympic podium for the first time.
For now, Belarus holds seven medals: two golds (Sergei Martynov, shooting; Azarenka/Mirnyi, tennis), two silvers (Aleksanda Gerasimenya, swimming), three bronzes (Azarenka, tennis; Marina Shkermankova, Irina Kulesha, weightlifting).
