Promoting traditional crafts as a means of social adaptation and integration of refugees, including children with special developmental needs

Project name: Promoting traditional crafts as a means of social adaptation and integration of refugees, including children with special developmental needs

Implementation period: 12 months

Applicant: Grodno regional organization of the Belarusian Red Cross Society, Grodno City Culture Center and its branch  Heritage Crafts Center

Project goal: Integration of refugees and children with special developmental needs into the local community for further socialization and self-realization in entrepreneurial activity

Project objectives:

1) To provide practical psychological assistance to refugees and to children with special developmental needs for further successful self-realization in the local community;
2) To  equip premises and organize space for workshops to teach traditional crafts by the Heritage Crafts Center of the Grodno City Culture Center and for practical psychological exercises for refugee children, including children with special developmental needs by the Grodno regional organization of the Belarusian Red Cross Society;
3) To promote socio-cultural integration of refugees and children with special developmental needs, including self-realization, learning of traditional craft techniques, organization of an outcome exhibition to demonstrate the works of project participants for subsequent employment and self-realization as entrepreneurs.

Target group: Refugees (children and adults), children with special needs in psychophysical development.

Brief description:

The project provides for the purchase of necessary equipment and materials for classes and master classes in traditional crafts (ceramics, wool felting, weaving, knitting, artistic leather processing) to help refugees to acquire new skills and learn crafts and assist them with professional self-determination. Children of refugees will be provided with an opportunity to attend classes in the studios of the Heritage Crafts Center for free. The available facilities will be adapted to conduct master classes for children with special developmental needs.

In order to attract more participants, awareness raising events will be carried out to reach more refugees and children with special developmental needs.

Following training, quarterly thematic, possibly solo exhibitions of project participants will be held.

The project envisages a joint workshop with entrepreneurs and craftsmen on the issues of integration and professional self-determination of the participants of the project.  

Other events shall include the opening of the exhibition of works by children with disabilities, refugees, visits to the Heritage Crafts Center for expositions, master classes with the invitation of masters from other regions.

Total funding (in USD): $50,000

Sources of financing:

  • Donor funds: $45,000
  • Co-financing (own contribution): $5,000
