Belarus’ Red Cross helps about 60,000 people since start of conflict in Ukraine

Belarus’ Red Cross helps about 60,000 people since start of conflict in Ukraine

MINSK, 8 June (BelTA) - About 60,000 displaced people from Lugansk and Donetsk regions have received assistance from the Red Cross Society of Belarus since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, Dmitry Rusakov, the head of the emergency response and search at the Red Cross Society of Belarus, told the media, BelTA has learned.

One of the Red Cross biggest projects recently has been helping displaced people of Lugansk and Donetsk regions of Ukraine. “I can voice the figure - €3 million. This is how much we have received from our partners from abroad. Some Br100,000 was collected in Belarus literally in the first months after the start of the conflict. The money was very helpful while we were waiting for the money from partners. It saved the lives and health of many displaced persons. It was used to finance surgeries, to buy medicines. All in all, about 60,000 people received help they needed. The work continues, because the conflict in Ukraine has not been settled yet. People cannot return to their homes

Families with many children, single-parent families, nursing mothers, elderly people living alone (who do not receive pension benefits), people with disabilities get vouchers for the purchase of food and other necessities. Those who decided to settle in Belarus, have an opportunity to participate in the contest of micro-initiatives to promote their business. Already 100 such initiatives are operational in Gomel Oblast.

Red Cross Society of Belarus is the largest humanitarian organization in the country. It was founded in 1921 and consists of six regional, Minsk city, road, district, city and 158 anchor organizations. It brings together more than 350 employees, 17,000 volunteers and 1.25 million members.
