MINSK, 10 July (BelTA) – A batch of expensive anti-HIV medications was delivered to the state enterprise Academpharm of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus on 10 July, the academy’s press service told BelTA.

According to the source, it is a gift from India’s largest pharmaceutical company Cipla Limited and personally from the company’s Chairman of the Board, Honorary Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Doctor Yusuf Khwaja Hamied. A total of over 6,000 packs of anti-HIV medications worth over $35,000 were delivered. Lalit Chokhani, Belarus' Honorary Consul in Mumbai, helped organize and deliver this batch of humanitarian aid.

The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) financed delivery by air and customs warehouse services. Academpharm took care of the documents the import of humanitarian aid requires.

The medications will be handed over to the national applied science center for pulmonology and phthisiology in line with the Healthcare Ministry’s distribution plan in order to be delivered to medical institutions all over the country later on. Academpharm and Cipla Limited have signed a contract on delivering anti-HIV medications during 2020. The medications are to be delivered to the Belarusian Healthcare Ministry.

The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus has cooperated with Cipla Limited for many years. An agreement has been reached on localizing the production of effective and safe medications in Belarus for treating socially significant diseases: HIV, hepatitis B and C, Alzheimer’s disease, and pulmonary arterial hypertension.
