MINSK, 17 July (BelTA) – I think that all in all there will be five initiative groups to nominate presidential candidates, Lidia Yermoshina, the chairwoman of the Belarus Central Election Commission (CEC), told reporters, BelTA has learned.
At a session on 17 July the CEC registered three groups (to nominate Alexander Lukashenko, Sergei Kalyakin and Sergei Gaidukevich). The CEC will gather for the next meeting on 20 July. It is expected that the commission will consider the registration of all other groups.
Lidia Yermoshina did not specify which groups exactly can be registered in the future. However, she noted that filing the documents by mail is the ground for refusal. It was this way that Sergei Zabolotsky filed his application. "No powers of attorneys, or slips from the passport certifying the citizenship, residence and age have been filed,” Lidia Yermoshina said.
In addition, not all groups comprise the required number of members: not fewer than 100 people. "However, the applicants said they would file additional lists today. And this is possible,” Lidia Yermoshina said.
Applications to register initiative groups shall close at 19.00 on 17 July. The CEC head expects four more packages to be filed by that time.
