MINSK, 11 January (BelTA) – The Belarusian People’s Congress is a landmark and momentous event, Aleksei Dzermant, a political analyst and a researcher at the Institute of Philosophy of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, said during a video interview hosted by the YouTube channel of the National Press Center of Belarus to discuss vectors of the country’s political development in 2021, BelTA has learned.

“The Belarusian People’s Congress is a landmark and momentous event that will shape Belarus’ future for the coming five years. I personally have certain expectations from it: firstly, I would like to hear the vision of the head of state and the country’s top officials of the country's development, including within the framework of constitutional reform, as well as the parameters of this reform. I would like to see more activity from the Congress participants. We see that the recent events have intensified activities on the ground, including patriotic ones. I would like to see community leaders who could take on the role of assistants to the state and some of its watchdogs. I think it is important that they participate in political life and decision-making,” the expert said.

The analyst stressed that work is now underway to summarize all proposals submitted to the Belarusian People’s Congress. “I would like to see a big picture of what people want to change. And this, of course, must be brought into correlation with the political experience of the head of state who understands what Belarusians could borrow from the experience of their neighbors, and at the same time to maintain control over their own state. Our task, on the one hand, is to respond to people's requests, and on the other, to change the system in order to give a bigger say to the public, but at the same time we should not lose the system itself, which can be reformed, refined, completed, but should not be dismantled, otherwise we will plunge into chaos,” he added.
