Shamko: The European Games is an important sport promotion project for Belarus and Europe

MINSK, 21 September (BelTA) – The European Games is an important project for the development and popularization of sport in Belarus and Europe, Belarus’ Sport and Tourism Minister Alexander Shamko said at the joint meeting of the Coordination Commission of the European Olympic Committees (EOC) with representatives of the organizing committee and the Directorate for the Second European Games fund at the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Belarus on 21 September, BelTA has learned.

“The forthcoming sport event is a great opportunity to demonstrate the sport, economic and tourism achievements of Belarus and all participating states. Belarus has everything necessary to host the European Games at a high level. The country has a well-developed sport infrastructure, the experience of hosting international competitions, qualified specialists and overall support from Belarus President, President of the National Olympic Committee Alexander Lukashenko,” the minister said.

According to him, the fulfillment of the country’s contract obligations is supervised by Belarusian Prime Minister, Chairman of the National Organizing Committee for the Second European Games Andrei Kobyakov.

According to Alexander Shamko, the First European Games in Baku laid a solid foundation for the organization of such multi-sport competitions. “Baku passed the European Games banner to Belarus and also extended a strong hand of friendship and assistance. We appreciate the experience and advice from the Ministry of Youth and Sport of Azerbaijan,” the minister stressed.

The joint meeting of the EOC Coordination Commission with representatives of the organizing committee and the Directorate of the Second European Games fund is discussing a number of issues related to the operation of the European Games Directorate, the competition program, the accommodation of athletes and guests, broadcasting, marketing program and other matters. “We are ready for a dialogue and also the demonstration of any facilities the EOC representatives might find interesting. Once the contract was signed on 1 September 2017, the parties got down to the implementation of the document. During the ongoing visit the parties are set to clarify a number of principled positions so that to have no disagreements. Belarus will be grateful to all the experts for any advice and concrete assistance,” Alexander Shamko said.

On 21 September, the EOC Coordination Commission is set to visit Minsk Arena and Falcon Club that will be used to host the European Games in Minsk in 2019.
