MINSK, 21 April (BelTA) - The government should have an active position on the initiative to connect the Silk Road Economic Belt and the Eurasian Economic Union, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said when delivering his State of the Nation Address on 21 April, BelTA has learned.
“The Government should be proactive in implementing the initiative on integrating the Silk Road Economic Belt and the Eurasian Economic Union in order to remove the barriers and restrictions to trade,” the head of state said.
Alexander Lukashenko stressed: “The top priority is still export, its growth and diversification.” Today, the President said, the demand has reduced on the traditional markets, primarily Russia and Ukraine. In this connection, Belarus cannot simply wait for the demand to bounce back. Hence the task to diversify Belarusian export, Alexander Lukashenko explained.
“We talked about this 5 or 7 years ago. Back then the solvency on our markets was normal, but we understood that it was not good to depend so heavily on one market as it may lead to trouble. We see this trend today,” the President said.
He admitted that in 2015 a lot was done to create the conditions for access to new markets, including at the highest level. For example, agreements were reached to expand trade and economic cooperation with China, India, Pakistan, and Vietnam.
A key factor in export promotion is ensuring a package principle of sales: after-sales service, prompt repairs, additional service, the head of state noted.
