WB to support Belarus’ higher education overhaul

MINSK, 24 May (BelTA) – The World Bank will support the upgrade of higher education in Belarus, Alex Kremer, World Bank Country Manager for Belarus, said in an interview with the Belarus 1 TV Channel, BelTA has learnt.

“Upon the request of the government we are getting down to elaborating a project in the field of higher learning. This will allow Belarus to bring its universities in compliance with modern standards and to update university curricular to meet the needs of employers and the labor market,” Alex Kremer said.

He also touched upon the project to retool secondary schools. “By 2022, some 25,000 children will go to modern schools upgraded within the framework of the project run jointly with the Education Ministry,” he noted.

Alex Kremer praised the level of education in Belarus, but noted that the system needs to be overhauled. “Children should not only memorize some facts, but be able to learn under their own steam,” he added.
