MINSK, 10 June (BelTA) - Russia will continue to provide support to Belarus, including in case the European Union and other countries impose additional sanctions, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Belarus Yevgeny Lukyanov told the media on 10 June, BelTA has learned.
“We will not abandon Belarus. The Belarusian economy is export-oriented, and I understand that the sanctions are crafted in such a way in order to undermine the export activity of Belarus and affect the country’s budget,” Yevgeny Lukyanov stressed.
The ambassador explained that foreign trade contacts between Belarus and Russia would be adjusted “taking into account the impact of the sanctions”. According to him, more detailed information on specific types of goods will be determined by the relevant federal agencies of Russia and their partners in Belarus.
The ambassador illustrated his attitude towards the sanctions by the words of Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei, who said at a meeting with diplomats that sanctions are imposed with an aim to provoke ‘hunger riots’. “That is actually the entire ideology, logic and hermeneutics of these sanctions,” said the ambassador. He also stressed the illegal nature of the sanctions. “They are illegal by the definition of international law and practice. Sanctions of this kind against any country can only be applied by a decision of the UN Security Council,” said Yevgeny Lukyanov.
