Opinion: Belarus and Russia need to intensify research in oncology

MINSK, 4 October (BelTA) – Belarus and Russia need to intensify research in oncology, Director of the Alexandrov National Cancer Center of Belarus Oleg Sukonko told the media, BelTA has learned.

According to Oleg Sukonko, it is almost impossible to do something global by local forces of one country. Serious research is needed at the highest level. The joint board of the Healthcare Ministries of Belarus and Russia on oncologic matters should update its work in this direction. Belarus believes it is necessary to develop a cooperation program at the legislative level and implement it at a systemic level.

Belarus cooperates with Russia in the pharmaceutical industry. Nativita Company, opened in Beshenkovichi, Vitebsk Oblast, that primarily focuses on the development and production of innovative medicines to treat cancer, cooperates with the Russian company Biocad.

Oleg Sukonko added that up to 50 foreign patients are treated in the Alexandrov National Cancer Center of Belarus on a daily basis. They come from Ukraine, Russia, the Baltic states, Arab countries, the USA, and others. A hotel with 120 rooms and a good dining room will open nearby in 2018. In the future, apartment-type rooms will open in the center.

The meeting of the joint boards of the Healthcare Ministries of Belarus and Russia took place at the Alexandrov National Cancer Center of Belarus on 4 October. The purpose of the event was to hold a constructive dialogue between the experts of the two countries on the development of new approaches to the prevention, diagnostics and treatment of malignant tumors.

Meetings of the joint boards of the Healthcare Ministries of Belarus and Russia are held on an annual basis. They are also attended by representatives of the Union State Permanent Committee, embassies of the two countries. The first joint board was devoted to the implementation of the Union State programs, the second one to the turnover of medicines, the third one to the protection of motherhood and childhood. The theme of this time’s meeting was proposed by Russian colleagues who wanted to get acquainted with the Belarusian experience in the area.
