Photo from archive MINSK, 24 August (BelTA) – The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) and the Russian state nuclear industry corporation Rosatom are discussing the creation of a nuclear research reactor in Belarus, BelTA learned from Andrei Kuzmin, Director General of the Belarusian energy and nuclear research institute Sosny of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, on 24 August.

The project to create a nuclear research reactor at premises of the Sosny Institute is being discussed by the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and Rosatom, said Andrei Kuzmin. A nuclear research and technology center may be established once the reactor is available. Apart from the reactor and engineering systems the center will include a radiochemical department, a materials science department, a testing department, and a science department.

Andrei Kuzmin reminded that the Sosny Institute already operates a number of nuclear and radiation plants, including a gamma radiation plant and an electron accelerator.

The Sosny Institute provides scientific support for the development of nuclear energy industry. The institute develops and assimilates R&D proposals for optimizing technological processes that improve nuclear, radiation, and environmental safety as well as the effectiveness of nuclear energy installations. It is Belarus’ only institution licensed for evaluating safety parameters in the area of nuclear energy usage.
