MINSK, 4 February (BelTA) – Two units of the Belarusian nuclear power plant satisfy about 40% of the country’s demand for electricity. The figure was mentioned by Aleksandr Yerin, Deputy Chief Engineer for Personnel Training, Head of the Education and Training Center at the state enterprise Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant, during a roundtable session hosted by BelTA.

Aleksandr Yerin said: “Since the turbine generator of the first unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant was synchronized with Belarus’ power grid, over 23 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity has been generated. The two units already satisfy about 40% of the country’s demand for electricity. It makes Belarus one of the world leaders in the terms of the share of nuclear generation in the country’s total energy budget.”

Belarus completely stopped importing electricity when the nuclear power plant was commissioned. Belarus’ dependence on imported natural gas was also reduced. The Belarusian nuclear power plant also satisfies the growing demand of the real sector of the economy and Belarusian households for electricity. Apart from that, the project has become a good stimulus for developing allied industries. Electric transport is among promising areas.
