MINSK, 4 August (BelTA) – Advantages of the Belarusian nuclear power plant will help the country secure a breakthrough into the future. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement in his address to the nation and the parliament on 4 August, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko said: “The significance of the Belarusian nuclear power plant for ensuring energy security and for our economy as a whole is simply huge. The development of the education system, technologies is connected to it. We don't want someone else to draw our attention to safety considerations. Belarus has been affected by the Chernobyl catastrophe. Belarusians have lived through a lot. We know the price of the consequences. As much as $19 billion has been spent on the rehabilitation of polluted territories alone. This is why incoming inspections during the construction of the nuclear power plant were as strict as those employed during the war. The advantages we are going to get will help us secure a breakthrough into the future (high technologies, cheap electricity, electric cars). Or a cutting-edge enterprise to make amino acids, which we are building together with China in Minsk Oblast. Thanks to such enterprises green economy will stop being a fashionable trend and will become our reality.”

The Belarusian leader stressed that in the last five to six years the collection of several kinds of recoverable resources in Belarus increased by 2.5 times. “Those are free raw materials that we just have to pick up. We've decided to stop using disposable plastic packaging as from 2021. It will be replaced by environmentally friendly packaging. I am going to support other proposals in this field, too. By the way, we've been recently talking less and less about outer space exploration. I dare remind you that Belarus is small in size and not very rich, yet thanks to talented people it has become one of the space powers. Just think about it,” the president added.
