Margvelashvili: Belarus’ experience in agriculture important for Georgia

MINSK, 1 March (BelTA) - The Belarusian experience in agriculture is especially important for Georgia, Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili said during expanded-participation talks with Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko on 1 March, BelTA has learned.

“The Belarusian experience in the development of the agricultural industry is especially important for Georgia. Rural dwellers account for 50% of the Georgian population. It is officially considered that these people have jobs. But this is really not so. They, in fact, run small farms. Agriculture accounts for 9% of the Georgian economy. It is a very small share,” Giorgi Margvelashvili said.

He noted that Georgia imports many agricultural products. In that connection, he commended the efforts of Belarus to develop the agricultural sector and once again stressed the interest in adopting the Belarusian experience.

Georgia is also interested in developing cooperation with Belarus in high technology and other industries. “We will outline new opportunities during our negotiations and during this visit,” the Georgian president said.
