Lukashenko urges focus on forward-looking industries, including bio-technology

MINSK, 16 June (BelTA) – We need to focus on forward-looking sectors, including bio-technology, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he heard out a report on the integration of biology and medicine, BelTA has learned.

The head of state said that his youngest son is interested in this field of knowledge but this is not why he attaches such attention to biology. "I generally admire chemists, mathematicians, biologists, physicists. I am more into humanities myself. But nevertheless, I have to deal with these issues at the state level. We cannot do without biology. There can be no medicine without biology. COVID scared us, and we had to fast-track vaccine production. We borrowed the technology from one place, took other things in the other. But we need to focus on domestic production. The basis should be there. We had to build a factory," the president said. “These viruses... It was COVID yesterday, today it is monkey pox. It will be something else tomorrow. We cannot do without bioscience. Therefore, when I had to deal with these issues, I realized that we need a serious approach to medicine, healthcare, science based on biology.”

Aleksandr Lukashenko said that he had agreed to develop cooperation in this sector with the Russian president: "They have the best samples in the world. We have reached an agreement with President Putin. He suggested we use any of their labs. The most advanced biological laboratory in Russia, as he told me, is in Sirius [educational center].”

According to the president, Vladimir Putin has invited Belarus to use the experience accumulated in Russia and suggested developing jointly the relevant area in Belarus. “We need to make use of it. We also need to study the world’s best practices in medicine, healthcare, biology, and so on. We cannot do without biotechnologies today. You see that we have already started working in this direction,” the Belarusian leader said.

The head of state emphasized the importance of developing other advanced areas as well. Not long ago the president hosted a government session to discuss the situation in the domestic microelectronics industry. “Today we have taken a look at biology. We will also study other areas related to defense and economic development. All these areas are promising. For example, nuclear power, space, BNBC [Belarusian National Biotechnology Corporation]. These are the areas that will always be in demand. Let us think how we are going to develop them, so as to keep our school and not fall behind,” the president said.
