MINSK, 16 November (BelTA) - Belarus has built a nuclear power plant not only for the sake of economy but also for the development of the nuclear scientific school, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said in an interview with Belarusian and foreign political observers on 13 November, BelTA has learned.
“As for the nuclear power plant, it is not so much a matter of economy but a matter of the future. The plant uses the highest technologies. Can you imagine how high the bar of achievements in nuclear engineering is? Many Belarusian specialists will get new competences, learn new technologies. That was exactly why I was interested in the construction of the nuclear power plant first of all,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
According to the president, Belarus asked Russia to train its specialists as the plant was being built. “You do it, we watch and help you in order to master these technologies faster,” the head of state explained.
According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, nuclear power plants are much more efficient than other sources of energy and generate cheaper electricity. “It is clean energy. It is not coal or even natural gas. This is very important for us and for Europe in general,” he added.
