Liepajas Metalurgs eager to buy about 30,000 tonnes of BMZ products monthly

RIGA, 4 February (BelTA) – The Latvian company Liepajas Metalurgs is interested in comprehensive cooperation with Belarusian Steel Works (BMZ trademark) and is eager to buy raw materials, counselor of the regional development department of the Latvian chamber of commerce Girts Kronbergs told reporters, BelTA has learned.

“Liepajas Metalurgs has recently purchased a big batch of Belarusian products to the tune of more than $12 million. We are ready not only to make one-time purchases but also to cooperate in the services sector, to develop new markets together. The two plants should move in the same direction instead of competing with each other,” the counselor said. The Liepaja-based plant is eager to buy about 30,000 tonnes of BMZ products per month, he said.

Girts Kronbergs has recently held negotiations regarding the prospects of cooperation between the two enterprises in the Embassy of Belarus in Latvia. He explained that the company has hard times. It turned bankrupt some time ago. “It was a long process. The plant has been purchased by a Ukrainian company which hires workers to resume production. We expect that our plant will work well,“ Girts Kronbergs said.

The Latvian side will visit BMZ to discuss all issues in detail within two weeks. “The annual turnover of the companies used to make up about €200 million. At present we are planning to reach serious volumes which will make up dozens of millions of euros per year. Of course, we will not reach this figure at once,” the specialist believes.

Liepajas Metalurgs is one of the oldest companies in Latvia. It was founded in 1882. The enterprise’s major products are steel reinforcing bars. The company’s products comply with the national standards of 18 countries.

Founded in 1984, OAO Belarusian Steel Works (BMZ trademark) is the managing company of the holding company BMC. The pipe rolling facility was launched in 2007. The company has produced over 1,600 new kinds of pipes so far. In 2009 the plant launched the manufacture of gauge.
