Industry, education seen as promising areas of Belarus-Iran cooperation

MINSK, 17 October (BelTA) – Belarus’ Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko outlined promising avenues of cooperation with Iran at an extended-participation meeting with First Vice President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mohammad Mokhber in Minsk on 17 October, BelTA has learned.

“During our narrow-participation meeting earlier today I outlined our priorities in bilateral cooperation. First of all, these are joint projects in manufacturing,” said Roman Golovchenko.

According to him, Belarus and Iran possess well-developed technological potential. “We produce a broad range of high-tech products that successfully replace items of Western manufacturers who left our markets. I view this as our common victory. However, we are far from reaching our full potential. We should waste no time in stepping up the import substitution effort. We express our gratitude to our Iranian partners for prompt response and enthusiasm to discuss bilateral cooperation,” the prime minister noted.

Roman Golovchenko highlighted such an area of cooperation as education. “The study of Iranian undergraduate and postgraduate students in Belarus has always been a significant factor in our educational ties and human contacts. In order to encourage more Iranian students to come to Belarus for undergraduate and postgraduate programs, I would ask you to fast-track the adoption of the relevant intergovernmental agreement on mutual recognition of education documents,” the Belarusian head of government said.

A week ago, Tehran hosted the 16th meeting of the Belarus-Iran economic cooperation commission. “Many issues were discussed, many decisions were made at the meeting. Today I propose to revisit a number of key issues, including those discussed by this commission,” added Roman Golovchenko.

“We view your visit as a key stage in preparation for the visit of the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Belarus next year,” the prime minister noted. “We are interested in long-standing cooperation with Iran in politics, trade, economy, humanitarian matters and other fields,” Roman Golovchenko added.
