GOMEL, 16 August (BelTA) – Belarusian Gomel Oblast and regions of Armenia would like to develop cooperation in innovations and high technology, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Armenia to Belarus Armen Ghevondyan told the media following a meeting with Chairman of the Gomel Oblast Executive Committee Gennady Solovei, BelTA has learned.
The ambassador said that the meeting examined the prospects for further promotion of interregional cooperation between Armenia and Belarus following the example of cooperation between Armenian regions and Gomel Oblast. The matter was about the development of trade and economic relations, the ways to bolster them. “We talked about the ways to give an impetus to the existing ties. We also highlighted mutual interest in advancing cooperation in innovations and high technology that define the economy today,” Armen Ghevondyan noted.
According to the diplomat, the parties still have some untaped potential for cooperation in various fields. It is therefore very important that regional administrations and companies outline steps and measure to boost cooperation and to gain concrete results.
Gennady Solovei introduced the ambassador to the economic and industrial potential of the region.
In January-June this year, the trade of Gomel Oblast with Armenia exceeded $4.8 million, up 54.6% year-on-year, the Gomel regional administration informed.
Some 35 Gomel companies export goods to Armenia. Major export items are whey powder, skimmed milk powder, uncoated multilayer paper, confectionery, timber, corking products, etc. Armenia major exports to Gomel Oblast include alcohol, diatomaceous earths, baking ovens, silver compounds, sublimated instant coffee, roasted beans, etc.
Interregional cooperation is governed by the agreement between Gomel Oblast and Armavir Region of 2013.
