European Union resuming trade dialogue with Belarus

MINSK, 13 October (BelTA) – The European Union is resuming the dialogue with Belarus in trade affairs, BelTA learned from Head of the European Union Delegation to Belarus Andrea Wiktorin.

The official said: “I am glad that we are here today and are beginning a new format of our dialogue in the sphere of trade. It is a very important step. Over the last few months our relations improved considerably in general. The fact that we are starting a dialogue on trade affairs, which is one of the number of branch-wise dialogues, is a very important step forward.”

In turn, Belarusian First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Yevdochenko noted that Belarus and the European Union already maintain a dialogue on economy and finance, on ecology. The dialogue on human rights has been resumed. The decision to resume dialogues on power engineering, customs cooperation has been made as well.

The agreement on the dialogue about trade was reached during the first session of the Belarus-European Union coordinating council in April 2016. “I am very glad that together with European partners we’ve kept our word and have started such an important format of our cooperation,” said Andrei Yevdochenko. He went on saying that the dialogue is aimed at removing mutual concerns and problems in addition to building a brand new level of trade relations that will be understandable, transparent and very important for the private sector.

The first round of the trade dialogue between the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Directorate General for Trade of the European Commission is scheduled to take place in Minsk on 13-14 October.
