OSTROVETS, 20 September (BelTA) – The European Commission (EC) is ready to provide the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department (Gosatomnadzor) of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry with additional technical assistance given the ongoing construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP), Gerassimos Thomas, Deputy Director General in the Directorate-General for Energy at the European Commission, told media on 20 September, BelTA has learned.
“We have confirmed our intention to provide more technical assistance to Belarus if needed. We are currently supporting two experts that assist the regulator and are ready to increase the volume of this support,” noted Gerassimos Thomas.
When asked on the type of the assistance, the EC representative said that everything depends on the Gosatomnadzor needs. “If there is a need for technical assistance to run stress tests, we are ready to provide it,” he said.
“Both the Energy Ministry and the regulator are ready to exchange information and maintain cooperation, and it is a very good start,” Gerassimos Thomas added.
