China described as Belarus' most important non-CIS partner

China described as Belarus' most important non-CIS partner

MINSK, 25 February (BelTA) – Belarus’ further strategic cooperation with the People's Republic of China has become the country’s major vector of cooperation with distant countries,  Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said as he spoke at the board meeting of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 25 February to review the diplomatic service in 2020. The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko, BelTA has learned.

“The relations with China are advancing to a new level of ‘iron brotherhood’ and ‘all-weather partnership’,” the minister stressed.

According to him, Belarus also expanded its cooperation in politics, trade and economy with other traditional and new prospective partners in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.

“For most of the year, there was a positive momentum in relations with the European Union and the United States,” he said.

According to the minister, despite the restrictions due to the pandemic, cooperation was quite intensive and constructive. “However, due to the reaction to the August presidential election in Belarus and the introduction of a number of restrictive measures by Western countries, Belarus had to respond with political and diplomatic actions,” the minister said.

Vladimir Makei added: “The current international situation confirms the demand for the actively promoted Belarusian initiatives in security such as the development of a multilateral political declaration on the non-deployment of intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles and the formation of the Digital Neighborhood Belt.
