MINSK, 10 June (BelTA) – The Belarusian Universal Commodity Exchange (BUCE) and the St Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry intend to join efforts to develop Belarus’ trade with St Petersburg and Russia’s Leningrad Oblast. The relevant agreement was reached as a BUCE delegation visited St Petersburg to present BUCE’s capabilities before representatives of the Russian private sector at premises of the St Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry, BelTA has learned.

The Belarusian Universal Commodity Exchange and the St Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry also intend to arrange joint seminars, business forums, presentations, and other informational and practical events meant to popularize exchange trade and expand its usage in trade between Belarus and St Petersburg. The St Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry said it is ready to assist BUCE with encouraging St Petersburg companies to trade via BUCE, primarily members of the St Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Vice President of the St Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry Yekaterina Lebedeva noted during the negotiations: “Belarus is traditionally one of the main trade and economic partners of St Petersburg. In 2020 the bilateral trade was close to $2 billion despite the negative consequences of the pandemic. I am convinced that this year on the back of the restoration of business activity we will easily secure even higher results, including thanks to growing exchange trade. This is why we are ready to inform members of the chamber about the opportunities the Belarusian exchange offers and recommend BUCE as an effective way of entering the Belarusian market.”

Heads of 30 companies operating in various branches of the economy participated in the BUCE seminar for representatives of the St Petersburg private sector. The companies specialize in rolled metal products, electric technology products, mechanical engineering, wholesale trade in agricultural products, railway equipment, and agribusiness equipment. Such events will be held on a regular basis in the future in accordance with agreements between BUCE and the St Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The St Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry is Russia’s oldest national business association. The chamber represents interests of small, medium, and large businesses that operate in all branches of the economy starting with the production sector and agriculture and ending with financial services and foreign trade. The chamber also contributes to the development of the St Petersburg economy, its integration into the Russian economy and the world economy, to the enabling of conditions conducive to successful entrepreneurship.
