Belarus to get €3.6m from European Union to strengthen drug quality control system

MINSK, 16 February (BelTA) – The European Union will grant Belarus €3.6 million for a project to strengthen the drug quality control system. The information is posted on the website of the Belarusian Health Ministry, BelTA has learned.

Belarus is implementing a EU-funded project designed to support the Belarusian Ministry of Heath in strengthening the system for quality control of pharmaceutical products. A relevant contract for 30 months was signed on 9 February 2016. The project is slated for completion by 8 August 2018. It was officially registered with the Economy Ministry on 27 October 2016. “The Health Ministry is implementing an annual program of action International Accreditation of Testing Laboratories for Medical Products and Support to Healthcare in Belarus (BELMED). This is the first national pilot project of the European Union in the field of healthcare. The total amount of financing in foreign currency will exceed €3.6 million,” the Health Ministry said.

The program envisages improvement of the technical infrastructure of the laboratory for quality control of medical products, including through granting considerable funds for the purchase of equipment, training of personnel, and some other measures.

The key objectives of the program also include to facilitate the integration of the drug circulation regulation system of Belarus into the common European system. “Work is underway to prepare the pharmaceutical inspectorate of the Heath Ministry for joining the Pharmaceutical Inspection Co-operation Scheme (PIC/S). Once the goal is achieved, this will promote international recognition of the national GMP compliance certificates and boost the export potential of Belarusian pharmaceutical companies that guarantee quality, effectiveness and safety,” the post on the website reads.
