Belarus, Rosatom discuss launch of BelNPP first unit in 2019

MOSCOW, 19 June (BelTA) – Belarus and the Rosatom State Corporation discussed the joint work undertaken to launch the first power generating unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP) in 2019, Belarus Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Semashko told the media after his meeting with Rosatom Director General Aleksei Likhachev on the sidelines of the Atomexpo forum in Moscow, BelTA has learned.

The first unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2019, and the second unit will go online in 2020, the deputy prime minister said. "At today’s meeting we discussed the progress in the project as we want the units to go online as scheduled. We agreed that the work on the first unit should be intensified," Vladimir Semashko said.

A meeting due in Ostrovets in the near future with the participation of Russian representatives will discuss the progress in the construction project and the delivery of equipment. The focus will be on the work at key facilities that are crucial for the timely commissioning of the power generating units.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant is a project to build a VVER-1200 type nuclear power plant 18km away from Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast. The BelNPP will have two power-generating units with the total output capacity of up to 2,400MW (2x1,200MW). The first power-generating unit will be commissioned in 2019, the second – in 2020.
