Belarus promised ability to sell nuclear power plant electricity in Russia as from 2024

Belarus promised ability to sell nuclear power plant electricity in Russia as from 2024

MINSK, 16 March (BelTA) – The ability to sell electricity generated by the Belarusian nuclear power plant on the Russian market will become available in 2024, BelTA learned from Pavel Zavalny, Chairman of the Energy Committee of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.

A delegation of the lower chamber of the Russian parliament is in Minsk. There are plans to discuss matters of bilateral cooperation in energy industry, including the construction and operation of the Belarusian nuclear power plant.

Pavel Zavalny said: “Great prospects for cooperation are opening up before us due to the forthcoming commissioning of the second unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. A genuine wholesale electricity market has been created in Russia. Within the framework of integration of our markets the ability to sell electricity of the Belarusian nuclear power plant on the Russian market will become available early next year.”

The Russian MP met with Belarusian Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich. The MP noted that Belarus-Russia cooperation in non-energy applications of nuclear technologies is also under consideration. Those include nuclear medicine, new materials, and information technologies. “Russia is ready to offer the latest R&D products for the sake of advancing integration processes of our countries,” he stressed.

The expansion of usage of gas engine fuel is another possible avenue of interaction.
