Belarus pins hopes on cooperation in science, technology in CEI

MINSK, 30 May (BelTA) - Belarus pins great hopes on the cooperation in science and technology in the Central European Initiative (CEI), Chairman of the Council of the Republic Mikhail Myasnikovich noted during the session of the CEI-PD Parliamentary Committee in Minsk on 30 May, BelTA has learned.

“Belarus hopes to benefit from the cooperation in science and technology in the CEI. So far the results leave much to be desired, although Belarus’ National Academy of Sciences opened a scientific center of the CEI Secondary Network in 2009. It has carried out irregular but relevant joint research,” Mikhail Myasnikovich pointed out. He also said he regrets that the center has not been working since 2014 due to the problems of the International Center for Theoretical Physics in Italy which was set to coordinate the CEI scientific cooperation.

According to the speaker, the CEI member states have the potential to boost cooperation in science and technology. For instance, Belarus is ranked 58th in the Knowledge Economy Index comprising around 150 countries.

Minsk is playing host to a session of the CEI Parliamentary Committee. Partaking in the session are Belarusian MPs, heads of some Belarusian ministries, CEI Deputy Secretary General Erik Csernovitz along with the parliamentary delegations of Austria, Slovenia, Romania, Poland, Moldova, Croatia, Bulgraia, Slovakia, Hungary, Italy, and Ukraine.

Belarus assumed the CEI presidency in 2017.
