Belarus, Italy to research longevity genetics together

MINSK, 18 October (BelTA) – Belarus and Italy intend to carry out joint projects to research longevity genetics, BelTA learned from Alexander Kilchevsky, Chief Academic Secretary of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB), on 18 October.

The NASB representative said: “During the CEI ministerial conference on science and technology we are going to present our proposals and a number of interesting projects. For instance, the NASB Genetics Institute is preparing proposals concerning a joint project involving Italian colleagues. Sardinia is one of the world’s five areas with the largest number of centenarians. We would like to study the genetic predisposition to a long life together and find out why people on Sardinia live longer. The idea is under consideration. The Italian colleagues are strongly interested in working with us.”

The Central European Initiative ministerial conference on science and technologies Biotechnology for Healthy and Active Life in the CEI Region will take place in Minsk on 26 October. The purpose of the conference is to resume the high-level dialogue of experts about the current state and prospects of cooperation in science, technology, and innovations in the CEI region. The conference is supposed to work out proposals on concrete projects to the benefit of the region, assist with the formation of the CEI agenda for 2018-2020. The conference is expected to gather ministers of the CEI member states, government officials, who are responsible for the development of science, technologies, and innovations, those, who oversee matters of healthcare, agriculture, and food industry. Research institutions, non-governmental organizations specializing in biopharmaceutics and biotechnologies for agriculture are invited to participate in the conference.
