MINSK, 14 May (BelTA) – Belarus would like to study Sweden’s expertise and knowledge in using renewable energy and handling household waste. The matter was in focus of the meeting between Belarus’ Ambassador to Sweden Dmitry Mironchik and Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Environment and Climate of Sweden Isabella Lovin, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The parties discussed partnerships in environmental protection and climate change mitigation, as well as the need to intensify cooperation taking into account that both countries are located in the Baltic Sea region. “A special focus was placed on the study and transfer of Sweden’s best practices in utilizing renewable energy and recycling household waste to produce energy,” the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed.
Belarus and Sweden closely cooperate in environmental protection and climate change mitigation. Over the recent years, Sweden has helped implement a number of projects in Belarus, including modernization of water treatment facilities in Baranovichi, Brest, Grodno, Slonim, and Vitebsk. In 2018, almost 700 tonnes of highly toxic rocket fuel were removed from Belarus and disposed of for the production of electricity and various chemical products with the help of Swedish partners.
Non-governmental organizations from both countries are actively involved in cooperation in the environmental field, including the Center for Environmental Solutions, BirdLife Belarus, Forum Sud and others.
