GRODNO, 6 September (BelTA) – Belarusian Grodno and Polish Augustow are working on a joint project to build pedestrian and cycle bridges, Grodno Mayor Mechislav Goi said as he met with Augustow Mayor Wojciech Walulik on 6 September, BelTA has learned.
The Augustow Mayor together with well-known Polish athletes made a kayak trip along the Augustow Canal and the river Neman on 5 September. On 6 September the Polish delegation arrived in Grodno. The final destination on the route is Lithuania’s Druskininkai.
“We are establishing close ties between the cities and hope our cooperation will enter a new level. We are working on a joint project to present it into the program of international technical assistance. The project envisages the construction of pedestrian and cycle bridges over the Neman in Grodno and the Netta in Augustow,” Mechislav Goi said during the meeting with the Polish delegation in Grodno.
He emphasized the importance of the fact that the Augustow guests travelled to Grodno by water. “It is a good promotional campaign for the Augustow Canal and its potential. We see that this route exists and we hope it will be in demand. Starting from October 2016 the canal and our city will be part of the so-called visa-free zone. I am confident that the move will help boost tourist numbers,” Mechislav Goi noted.
Augustow Mayor Wojciech Walulik also expressed confidence that the canal and the cities it connects have a joint future. Grodno and Augustow are expected to sign an agreement on cooperation on 7 September.
