Belarus, Costa Rica interested in strengthening trade, economic contacts

MINSK, 22 April (BelTA) – Belarus and Costa Rica are interested in the enhancement of contacts in the economy and trade. The statement was made at the meeting of Belarus Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei and Costa Rica Minister of Foreign Affairs Manuel Gonzalez Sanz at the UN Headquarters in New York on 21 April, BelTA has learned.

During the meeting which took place for the first time the sides expressed mutual interest in stepping up efforts to strengthen the ties between the two countries, first of all, in the economy and trade. “The ministers of foreign affairs pointed out the absolute openness of the economies of the two countries and the importance to promote direct ties between the business circles of Belarus and Costa Rica,” the press release of the press service reads.

Apart from that, the ministers agreed to work out a memorandum of understanding and discussed the need to initiate the process of regular consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Belarus and Costa Rica.

The ministers paid special attention to the vigorous coordinated efforts of the delegations of Belarus and Costa Rica in the UN system to promote the interests of medium income countries. “An agreement was made to continue this important work and consider the possibility to organize the meeting of the initiative group of medium income countries at the ministerial level in the autumn of 2016,” the press release of the press service reads.

It was reported earlier that Vladimir Makei is taking part in the high-level events at the UN Headquarters in New York on 20-22 April. As part of the visit, the Belarusian minister of foreign affairs held a number of bilateral meetings, including with the minister of foreign affairs of Costa Rica.
