Advanced cooperation between Belarusian Economy Ministry, UNECE noted

MINSK, 2 June (BelTA) – Belarusian First Deputy Economy Minister Alexander Zaborovsky met with Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Christian Friis Bach, the Ministry’s press service told BelTA.

The meeting was arranged as part of the official presentation of the third review of Belarus’ environmental performance in Minsk and was timed to World Environment Day (5 June).

Participants of the meeting stated the high level of Belarus’ cooperation with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, in particular, in innovations, export and green economy matters. It was noted that the country effectively applies recommendations made by UNECE experts.

Alexander Zaborovsky stated that Belarus sees UNECE as an important and serious partner that has state-of-the-art experience and knowledge. Belarus also sees UNECE as a unique platform for sharing the best practices between member states. The official underlined UNECE’s special contribution to the development of public private partnership in Belarus.

Alexander Zaborovsky said: “Reaching the UN Sustainable Development Goals should become a most important guideline for the entire international community. These goals are taken into account by the draft program on Belarus’ social and economic development in the current five-year term.”

Matters concerning the development of green economy, which are vigorously promoted by UNECE, are also included in the medium-term and long-term development programs of Belarus.

The third review of Belarus’ environmental performance contains 14 chapters reflecting the country’s accomplishments in managing environmental protection since the second review in 2005. The third review also highlights efforts to integrate ecological aspects into the national economy. During the presentation of the third review accomplishments were mentioned in introducing cutting-edge environmental solutions in power engineering, transport, organic agriculture, biological diversity, housing and utilities industry, management of water resources, waste management and other areas. Education, green economy, and the Sustainable Development Goals are recurring themes in all these areas.
