MINSK, 6 December (BelTA) – Russia will defend Belarus in time of need while Belarus is always ready to support Russia, BelTA learned from State Secretary of the Security Council of Belarus Aleksandr Volfovich.
Aleksandr Volfovich said: “The two states should support each other in the international arena with regard to the protection of national interests of the one country and the other one. In time of need the Russian Federation will defend the Republic of Belarus while the Republic of Belarus is always ready to support the Russian Federation.”
He pointed out that, in his opinion, a unique document has been submitted for consideration of the Supreme State Council of the Union State of Belarus and Russia – a treaty on mutual security guarantees. “It is the first regulatory instrument that stipulates that the two states stand by each other and guarantee each other’s security if necessary. If one state appeals to the other one. It is very important,” the state secretary of the Security Council stressed. He clarified that the treaty on mutual security guarantees takes into account provisions of Russia’s Military Doctrine, including the use of nuclear weapons. “It stipulates that if there is a threat to the security of the Republic of Belarus, the Russian Federation may use nuclear weapons to protect Belarus’ national interests,” he noted.
Aleksandr Volfovich stressed that all the security-related documents of Belarus and Russia differ substantially from similar documents of the United States of America and the collective West. The former are designed to find ways to neutralize modern challenges and threats and have a friendly and peace-loving nature that threatens no one. Meanwhile, countries on the other side are intent on finding the guilty parties, enemies, and dangers in the East, intent on militarization and inflating their military budgets.
“We don’t consider anyone as a potential enemy and aggressor. But we are ready to defend our national interests. Both Russia and Belarus have always been in favor of peace, amicable resolution of all issues, a mutually respectful attitude to the sovereignty of all states, and the accomplishment of tasks for the benefit of our nations. Matters of social and economic development are prioritized both in Belarus and Russia. Military aggression, capture of foreign lands, and capture of some foreign economic markets are not prioritized,” Aleksandr Volfovich stressed.
