UNICEF: Government education spending at acceptable level in Belarus

MINSK, 3 November (BelTA) – The Belarusian government demonstrates an appropriate level of education spending, Dominic Richardson, a senior education specialist at the UNICEF Innocenti Research Center, noted at the KEF-2017 conference Foundations of the Future on 3 November, BelTA has learned.

“Belarus has some advantages in education. The country invests around 5% of GDP in this field. This number has been at the same level for quite a few years. Basically, it is comparable to the expenditure of other countries in the region and remains at the level of high-income economies. This is why if we imagine that the education system is a body, the blood circulation is good,” Dominic Richardson remarked.

In his opinion, the government should maintain the education spending at this level. “The share of expenditure is but one piece of the puzzle. Every effort should be made for other pieces to be effective. Care about families with children should be viewed as a long-term investment,” the expert added.
