MINSK, 19 September (BelTA) – Belarus can make a good host of the UEFA Super Cup, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin told the media on 19 September, BelTA has learned.
“As the head of UEFA, a transparent organization, I cannot make any statements as it is [the choice of the UEFA Super Cup venue] a matter of voting. If I start making conclusions or voicing any decisions, it will be at least strange. I do not know yet where and when the next competitions will take place. I am confident, however, that the Belarusian federation can make a bid and can definitely make a good host of the tournament,” Aleksander Ceferin stressed.
Belarus has played host to international football competitions of different level, including the UEFA development tournaments and European Women’s U17 and U19 Championships. The country applied to host the UEFA EURO 2020 and the UEFA Super Cup 2020 and 2021.
Belarus plans to bid to host the UEFA Super Cup 2022. The Belarusian delegation sent its declaration of interest on 20 June. Applications close in late October. The final decision on the venue for the UEFA Super Cup 2022 will be made in spring 2020.
The UEFA Super Cup is a one-off fixture between the winners of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League. The European Super Cup was set up in 1972 by Anton Witkamp, a reporter and later sports editor of Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.
Under to the Super Cup contract, all expenses related to the organization and holding of the event are covered by UEFA in the form of a financial reward, which is paid after the end of the event.
