Surikov: The Union State is beyond competition today

MINSK, 29 March (BelTA) – The Union State is unparalleled today, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Belarus Alexander Surikov said in an interview to the Belarus One TV Channel, BelTA has learned.

“The Union State is beyond competition today. It remains relevant,” the Ambassador said. According to the diplomat, the Eurasian Economic Union can not fully replace the Union State.

Alexander Surikov said that working in Belarus is special due to the fact that this is a post-Soviet state which makes part of the Union State. “It is the most advanced formation in economic, political, military and technical areas in the post-Soviet space. There are few such advanced formations in the world,” he stressed.

The Ambassador also talked about his trips to Belarus before his time as the head of the diplomatic mission in Minsk. In his words, the situation in the country was different in the 1990s. “Desperation in faces, unstable currency. In 2002 the situation changed to the better. The country had more stable currency and the people had hope and confidence in tomorrow,” the diplomat recalled. According to Alexander Surikov, in 2006 the country acquired an absolutely different look, which could be envied by many other post-Soviet member states.

The head of the diplomatic mission added that there are difficulties in Belarus as well. “They were back then (in 2006 – BelTA’s note) and the country have some of them today. However, taking into account the working capacity and commitment of the nation, the mood of the Belarusian authorities it can be said that all these difficulties are just temporary,” he noted.
