Sergeyenko: Affordable, high-quality education is among Belarus’ top priorities

MINSK, 29 August (BelTA) — High-quality, affordable education has always been among the priorities of the state, Igor Sergeyenko, Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, said during a seminar to discuss legislative aspects of the efforts to improve the education system as part of the preparation of the bill “On amending education laws”, BelTA has learned.

“On 27 August, on the eve of the new academic year, the Nationwide Conference on Teaching was held with the participation of the president. Further development of the education system was discussed. The president has set serious goals, which we will need to achieve together. Today, as part of the work on the bill “On amending education laws”, we are holding a seminar to discuss legislative aspects of the efforts to improve the education system,” Igor Sergeyenko said. “As the president noted, education is a foundation of our life, which penetrates all sectors and determines the development of the entire nation. Therefore, it is obvious that one of the state's priorities remains high-quality and accessible education aimed at raising a patriot of the country, unlocking personal potential and developing skills that fully meet the needs of the economy.”

There are over 7,000 educational institutions in Belarus, which provide education to more than three million students and employment to about 400,000 workers.

“The basic principles will always be unchanged: state support, fairness and equal access to quality education, employer-sponsored programs, and guaranteed first workplace. The most important principle of lifelong learning is also being implemented. The education system meets the requirements set by the society and the state. The president requires not to hide the problems in the education system and not to sugarcoat the reality,” Igor Sergeyenko emphasized. “The head of state has set a number of goals in education, which should be achieved in the near future: to attract highly motivated and creative teachers to work in the education system, to further improve personnel training, to raise the prestige of teaching profession, to remove administrative restrictions by encouraging creativity and initiative. These tasks can be completed, among other things, if the legislation is timely improved.”

The participants of the seminar are set discuss the bill “On amending education laws”, ways to improve the education system, training of highly qualified scientific workers, development of a modern university as a center of scientific and educational activity, operation of general secondary education institutions with an ultimate goal to improve the quality of education.
