Serbia to intensify cooperation with Belarus

MINSK, 18 May (BelTA) – Serbia is determined to intensify cooperation with Belarus, Serbia President Tomislav Nikolic said in an interview to BelTA and the Belarusian Television and Radio Company during his visit to Minsk on 18 May.

Tomislav Nikolic recalled his meeting with the Belarusian head of state following his inauguration as the President of Serbia. Back then, an agreement was reached to intensify cooperation, first of all, in the economic sector. “These agreements produced some results,” he said. At the same time the Serbian president stated that the Belarusian-Serbian economic relations have been affected by the global economic crisis in the past years.

According to the Serbian leader, the parties are currently discussing ways to intensify ties, expand the presence of Belarusian companies on the Serbian market and Serbian companies in Belarus. The matter pertains to the agricultural and industrial sectors which, according to Serbia, have prospects of getting access to third markets.

“We will be intensifying our bilateral economic relations,” said the president of Serbia. As for the political cooperation, he pointed out a convergence of the two heads of state’s views on many issues of the international agenda. “There are no obstacles for a dynamic growth of our cooperation. Serbia views the relations with both West and East as equally important. For now, the country finds more understanding and friendship in the East,” Tomislav Nikolic said.
