Senator opines on main idea behind Belarus’ new Constitution draft

MINSK, 22 February (BelTA) – The main idea behind the Constitution draft is that Belarus is a country for people, member of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Konstantin Drozdovsky told BelTA.

“The national referendum on amendments and additions to the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus is important for every Belarusian. It will determine the country's development path for years to come,” Konstantin Drozdovsky said.

According to him, the current Constitution has played a significant role in the development of Belarus - for many years it served as a strong foundation for a fledgling independent state. “Yet, time does not stand still. International developments, the transformation of economic and political processes, the modernization of all spheres of the Belarusian society prompted us to update the fundamental law. The Constitution retains three major vectors: security, a welfare state and mutual responsibility of the state and the citizen. This means that Belarus will keep supporting its citizens in difficult situations as before,” the senator noted.

Konstantin Drozdovsky emphasized that in recent months the referendum had been actively discussed at various dialogue platforms and by labor collectives. “The main idea behind our Constitution is that Belarus is a country where everything is done for the sake of people, stability and prosperity of the country. It is the duty of every Belarusian to take part in the referendum on amendments and additions to the Constitution. We will vote for our future, for a strong and prosperous Belarus,” he stated.
