VITEBSK, 17 July (BelTA) - Positive changes in the relations between Russia and the United States, the countries of Western Europe will benefit Belarus as well, Sergei Rakhmanov, the Chairman of the International Affairs and National Security Commission of the Council of the Republic, told the media while commenting on the meeting between presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Helsinki on 16 July.
“If the Helsinki summit brings about some changes that will have a positive impact on Russia's relations with the West and the United States, this will benefit Belarus too,” Sergei Rakhmanov noted. This is due to the strategic level of the relations between Belarus and Russia, the structure of the economies of the two countries which are intertwined. According to him, cooperation with Russia is of fundamental importance for Belarus. Belarus is not just a political ally for the Russian Federation but a partner who can significantly help it ensure its economic security. Therefore, the situation in Russia has an impact on the situation in Belarus, the senator said.
Sergei Rakhmanov is taking part in an expanded meeting of the International Affairs and National Security Commission of the Council of the Republic in Vitebsk.
