MOSCOW, 2 April (BelTA) – Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Russia Vladimir Semashko believes that the suggestions to revise the Union State Treaty should be discussed later. The interview with the Belarusian diplomat was published in the Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspaper on 2 April, BelTA has learned.
“In my view, the current level of the Union State integration does not contradict vital interests of the two states. It is possible that individual provisions of the treaty might have to be revised and updated in the future. However, first of all, it is necessary to conscientiously fulfill the obligations stipulated by the current version of the treaty, first of all, its economic part, before considering its public discussion, a referendum, which was also suggested. Otherwise, people will simply stop trusting us. We cannot erode and devalue all the gains because of unfair complaints and some disagreements. We need to resolve these disagreements without jeopardizing the interests of each other and the image of the Union State. Therefore, I believe that the revision of the Union State Treaty should be postponed,” the diplomat noted.
At the same time Vladimir Semashko deems it necessary to update the action plan to implement provisions of the Union State Treaty. “We need to specify actions to be taken in order achieve the desired goals, in order to give a fresh impetus to the Union State development,” the ambassador underlined.
