MINSK, 10 November (BelTA) - The Russian state corporation Rosatom is discussing with Belarus possible construction of another nuclear power plant and a research reactor, Rosatom's Director General Alexey Likhachev said in a video address to the personnel of nuclear companies and organizations, BelTA has learned.
“On 3 November, the Belarusian power unit was connected to the country's power grid. It is the first Generation III+ reactor built on the European continent beyond Russia's borders. The launch of the Belarusian unit became an event of national scale. It is a joint victory of Russian and Belarusian specialists, a contribution to uniting people. We are currently discussing with the Belarusian authorities possible construction of another nuclear power plant and a research reactor,” Alexey Likhachev said.
The Belarusian nuclear power plant built near Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast uses the Russian design AES-2006 featuring two VVER-1200 reactors with the total output capacity of 2,400MW. The Russian state nuclear industry corporation Rosatom is the general contractor. The first power unit is scheduled to be put into operation in Q1 2021, the second one – in May 2022.
