MINSK, 5 August (BelTA) – Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina named the possible date for the presidential election in Belarus, 30 August 2020, in an interview to the ONT TV channel, BelTA has learned.
Speaking about the optimal time for holding the presidential election, the CEC head said that it was early spring. “The parliamentary elections will be held in November and the new parliament will be formed in December. We will have to start the presidential election campaign just three months after that. Why then have we moved the two campaigns apart?” she said.
“The presidential campaign is likely to take place within the period determined by the Constitution. The last possible Sunday is 30 August 2020. I believe this will be the date for the presidential election in Belarus,” Lidia Yermoshina said.
In her words, although it is still summer, the majority of citizens will be back home from vacations. “This is however just an assumption,” the CEC head said.
In April in his State of the Nation Address Aleksandr Lukashenko said that the elections to the House of Representatives and the Council of the Republic would be held in 2019. The presidential election will take place in 2020.
It is expected that the elections to the Council of the Republic will take place on 7 November, to the House of Representatives on 17 November.
