Opinion: Sports should stay away from politics

MINSK, 11 April (BelTA) – Sports should stay away from politics and any abuse, Deputy Head of the Belarus President Administration Valery Mitskevich said at a conference in Minsk on 11 April, BelTA has learned.

“Sport unites countries and nations. It can be called a universal language of communication. We must do everything possible to ensure that sport stays clean. It must remain completely open, stay away from politics and any abuse,” said Valery Mitskevich.

In recent years the world community has been actively fighting such problems as doping and match fixing. Sports competitions are regulated by more and more complex and rigid rules and regulations, which often become a source of conflicts and disputes. The deputy head of the Belarus President Administration is confident that today’s conference will help find the best options for getting out of difficult situations, while practical tools, recommendations, and advice from high-level international experts will be in demand and useful.

Sport development is a priority for most countries of the world, and Belarus is no exception in this regard. The country has recently made enormous progress in this direction. Today, Belarus can by right call itself a nation of sports. This is the result of the common efforts of the state, society and many enthusiasts of the sports movement, Valery Mitskevich added.

The ongoing international conference in Minsk highlights sport-related disputes.
